Stop pricing tires per tire

A drift driver goes through 30 to 40 tires in a competition weekend. That one fact changes what a discount is worth and what availability is worth.

Almost every tire brand is built around a durable purchase. You buy four, you keep them for three years, and the marketing is about reassurance over a long period.

Drifting is not that. An average competitor burns 30 to 40 tires across a competition weekend. Eight weekends a year and you are not buying a set of tires.. you are running a supply chain with a small warehouse in it.

Three things this changes

  • Cost per weekend beats cost per tire. A dollar off a tire is worth thirty-something dollars to you across a weekend. Being out of stock on the Thursday costs you the whole event.
  • Availability outranks discount. The week before an event, a tire you can actually get is worth more than a cheaper one you cannot.
  • Batch consistency becomes a commercial problem. Run forty tires from the same batch and you will notice variation between batches long before anyone in our building does.

What we did about the third one

We publish our variance. Every set ships with a batch record: that batch's measured figures beside the published ones, with the deviation and the tolerance it had to fall inside.

The deviations on it are real and they are not zero. A card where every deviation reads 0.00 is a brochure, and you would spot it immediately.

Where a value falls outside tolerance, the batch does not ship.

That sentence is printed on the card. It is only worth anything for as long as it stays true, which is rather the point of printing it.

The quantities we quote in

Our warehouse tiers are not generic quantity breaks. Tier 40 is one competition weekend for one driver. Tier 160 is a four-car team for the same weekend. If a tier does not correspond to something that actually happens at an event, it is a number somebody invented in a spreadsheet.
